Oakdale track begins the indoor season at McNeese

Oakdale track begins the indoor season at McNeese
The Oakdale track team under the guidance of head coach Michael Deville kicked off its indoor season with a meet at McNeese on Saturday.
"It was a good experience for young kids," Deville said. "A couple of them had stage fright. Hunter Longino finished fourth, and Garrett Kingan was sixth in shot put out of 20 competitors. James Evins finished eighth in the 55-meter dash, but his first heat time was third overall for qualifying time. Jondasha Davis tied for third in long jump at 16'5" and fourteenth in the 55-meter dash."
Hunter Longino recored a distance of 42'7" in shot put coming in behind Johnny Howell of All American Track, Landon King of Pineville, and Jonathan Crawford of Buckeye. "It felt good to compete and to get back into track," said the sophomore. "But I was a little rusty, but I think the next track meet will be better."
Fredrick Terrell came in at fifth place in the Triple Jump at 32'5" and ran 10.34 in the prelims of the 55-Meter Hurdles. Garrett Kingan finished seventh in the Shot Put at 41'3", and Travian Daily came in two spots behind at 39'8". Phillip Poullard in the finals of the Boys Long Jump finished sixteenth at 17'1". Oakdale as a team ran 1:41.80 to come in 13th in the Boys 4X200 Meter Relays.
On the girls' side, Annisha Moton finished ninth in the Triple Jump finals at 30'9". Coriana Moreaux joined her teammate Jondasha Davis in placing in the Long Jump finals with 15-feet. Moreaux also placed sixth in High Jump with a mark of 4'9". Shadiamond Johnson placed 21st in the Girls 400-Meters running 1:07.96. The girls had two teams in the 4X200-Meter Relays  that finished 11th and 12th places.
The next indoor meet is at LSU on January 21 before returning to McNeese a week later. On February 4 is the LSU Last Chance, and the State Indoor Meet is February 18 back at LSU.

Oakdale falters in a big divisional matchup

Oakdale was poised to go into its match up at Rapides Friday night undefeated in district play setting up a battle of the unbeatens, but things did not go as planned as Bunkie threw a monkey wrench into the plans in a makeup game, and the Warriors could not rebound against the vaunted Mustangs.
The week started the Tuesday night before with a Oakdale winning a thriller 63-59 against University Academy of Cenla. The Warriors began the game on a cold streak from the field allowing the Lions to take the 13-8 lead. A very physical first quarter came to a close with both teams combining for 14 fouls, and 12 of the combined 27 points came from the free throw line as UA led 18-9.
Raymond Guillory scored both free throws on back-to-back trips to the charity stripe as Oakdale found itself down 19-14. Guillory along with Malcolm Pugh scored a combined six points to tie it up at 20 with 4:30 remaining in the first half. The free throw fest continued into the second quarter with a combined 25 fouls in the first half yet Oakdale was down 30-27
Pugh made it a one point game seconds into the second half, and Guillory finished the third quarter with 15 of his team's 18 points as Oakdale lead 45-43 to begin the final quarter in regulation. Later in the quarter Pugh scored on an assist from Guillory as the Warriors took the 59-57 lead and held on for the win.
"Last night's game we kinda got off to a rough start and regrouped at half time," said head coach Dustin Howard. "We made some adjustments, and the guys executed in the second half, and we played a lot better and was able to hang on at the end."
The next night in Bunkie Oakdale lost a tough game in overtime. "We had a non district contest (last night) with University Academy to kinda fill the bye week, and it turns out the University Academy was a lot like the game tonight so it's gonna help us to prepare," Howard said before the game. "This is a make up district game against Bunkie. I think we split with them last year. They're gonna be really athletic and really try to push the pace."
The home team led 43-38 after three quarter of play. Guillory scored to go within five points of the lead. Derrick Winfield then stole the ball away and got the score as Oakdale was down 47-44. Guillory scored coming out of a timeout before Bunkie started running out the clock and scored making it 51-46.  A timeout was called on the court 1:11 left in the game with Bunkie up 53-50.
Bunkie's inability to make free throws down the stretch was keeping Oakdale in the game. Pugh scored from the top of the key to tie the game at 53 with 34.9 seconds remaining in regulation, then Bunkie missed a three pointer as the clock expired sending the game to overtime. The teams traded baskets from beyond the arc to begin the overtime period, but Bunkie was able to make the free throws when they needed to as they got their first district win of the season.
The game at Rapides two nights later was over from the start. Desmond Green had more points in the first quarter himself than the Warriors combined as he scored four three pointers in successsion compared to only eight points from Oakdale. Oakdale found scoring opportunies at the free throw line at the beginning of the second quarter as the team scored five of its eight points from the charity stripe. The first half mercifully ended with Oakdale trailing 41-16.
The third quarter saw Oakdale heat up from the field. Guillory scored 11 points in the quarter, and James Evins added a couple of layups. Guillory then added a big three pointer in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the combined 28 points Rapides scored in the second half.
The Warriors are now 11-8 overall and 2-2 in district. They host Bunkie on January 31 and get a rematch against Rapides on February 7 in the home finale of the regular season.

Lady Warriors remain tied for second place in district

Lady Warriors remain tied for second place in district
The Oakdale Lady Warriors entered Friday night's game at Rapides with a chance to tie the Lady Mustangs for the district lead, but came away with the 56-38 loss. Even with the loss the Lady Warriors remain tied for second place in district helped out by a Rosepine loss at Pickering and a Many loss at Menard.
Head coach Ted Fontenot admitted their may have been a fatigue factor that led to the loss at Rapides as the game was the third in four nights for his team. The team hosted University Academy of Cenla on the Tuesday and a night later played at Bunkie in a make up game from the week before.
"We started off cold in the first quarter," Fontenot said. "We missed some free throws and some easy shots in the paint, and in the second quarter I think we responded and made it a 4 point game at halftime. And then in the third quarter we got tired and started making some mental mistakes that hurt us and just took us out the game."
Rapides was dominating in the first quarter on both sides of the ball to lead 12-6 and was disrupting the timing of Oakdale offensively.  Half of Oakdale's points in the first quarter came on one basket from beyond the arc out of the hand of Setorie St. Andre. She scored another three pointer, and the rest of her team added 10 points to make it a 23-19 game at halftime. But a cold shooting performance in the third quarter allowed carnage to set in that continued into the fourth quarter. Highlighting the second half was Sanaa St. Andre who made three baskets from three-point range.
"We're still in it," Fontenot acknowledged. "We're not disappointed. We were just hoping for a better outcome especially in the second half tonight, but we'll get another shot at them when they come to our place."
The week began with a 44-35 win against University Academy. "We knew they were gonna be a very quality team," Fontenot said. "They had 15 wins, so we knew we had to bring our A game. And I think our girls came out with some good intensity to start with, and we played a good four quarter game. It got tight on us which is good because we need that adversity for the playoffs because in the playoffs it's gonna be tight throughout."
The first eight minutes ended with Oakdale leading 15-6, and the game came down to how well Oakdale shot from the free throw line as they went cold shooting from the field. The Lady Warriors combined to shoot 13 for 18 from the free throw line. Leading the way was Ke'Maesha St. Andre who went eight for 12 from the line with all but two points coming in the second half. Treshunda Joseph added a pair of free throws in the fourth quarter, and Sanaa St. Andre scored three points from the charity stripe.
"I was proud of our team for showing some good adversity and not giving up and fighting through a tough game to win that one," said Fontenot. "It was a very good win for us."
A night later the Lady Warriors played a Bunkie team that Fontenot described as "not the strongest team in the district."  He went on to say, "They have four seniors, and (Quantisha Seaberry) is definitely the girl to stop. We need to contain her and make sure she does't get hot on us. She is their top scorer and leading player. but if we play well I think we should be OK."
His team was more than OK as it dominated for the easy 64-18 win. The Lady Warrior defense held Seaberry to only seven points and completely shut her down in the second half. On the other side of the ball, the Lady Warrior offense came out the gate hot scoring 20 points in the first quarter. Setorie St. Andre came up big with a three pointer from wing as a timeout out was called on the court with 3:06 remaining in the opening frame.
Good ball movement on the part of Oakdale in the second quarter lead to two points on the score board to start a 8-0 run as Bunkie called a timeout on the court trailing 30-13. The first half ended with Oakdale up 33-13. The hot shooting continued as six different Lady Warriors provided points in the second half to finish off the Panthers.

Warriors sit atop District 3-2A at 2-0

Warriors sit atop District 3-2A at 2-0
Dustin Howard used a play out the Valparaiso playbook to win 52-51 at Rosepine improving his Oakdale Warriors to 2-0 in district. The play for Valparaiso that Howard used came at the buzzer to beat Ole Miss 70-69 in the 1998 NCAA Tournament.
"I called a timeout and we set up a play made famous by Bryce Drew at Valparaiso in the NCAA tourney," Howard said. "I had showed them this historical play one day during a film session so they remembered how it was supposed to go. James Evins volunteered to be the quarterback, and he threw a pass that would have made coach Randall Gordon proud to Raymond Guillory who was triple covered near halfcourt."
What happened next will go down in Oakdale lore. In Howard's words, "Raymond took two dribbles and elevated and drained a 40 footer to win it at the buzzer."
The win at Rosepine came four nights after a 50-48 win at home against Pickering. "We were tied at half and hadn't played really well," Howard said. "We had a couple key players fighting illness, but they powered through. I'm glad our team was able to see the immediate reward of fighting hard. Fun win."
As in the Rosepine game, the win came down to basket from Raymond Guillory as time expired. "It was tied 48-48 with under a minute left, and we decided to hold the ball and take the last shot, Howard said. "We got the ball to Raymond and got out of the way. He made a strong move to the basket and made a tough shot to win it. Huge play for a sophomore."
Guillory has 55 points combined in the two district games, and 18 of those came in the last eight minutes of the game against Rosepine. Howard describes him as a "special player" who "has what some coaches call 'the clutch gene.'"
"We are continuing to improve as a team, and we are gaining a ton of experience with all the close games," said Howard. "We may be a little ahead of schedule, but we are going to keep working to get where we want to be. I love this team."
The Warriors are tied with Rapides atop the 3-2A standings, and the two teams collide with each other in Lecompte on January 13.

Lady Warriors split a pair of district games

Lady Warriors split a pair of district games
Splitting a pair of district games, the Oakdale Lady Warriors begin 2017 with a 2-1 district record and a record of 13-5 overall. The team is tied with Many and Rosepine for second place is District 3-2A behind Rapides who sit at 2-0 in district.
The win came 40-34 at home on December 30, 2016, against Pickering that Warrior coach Ted Fontenot described as a team with "some good young talent." Fontenot went on and said, "We knew they would be quick on defense and on their full court press. We did not shoot the ball well that night missing some easy shots."
The coach credited his leading scorer on the night for the win and also gave credit to two players who provided a spark off the bench. "Sanaa St. Andre had 18 points and 13 rebounds," he said. "Alexis Davis and Brianna Hargrove came off the bench to give us positive play on defense and offense."
Davis scored six points matching her second highest scoring total on the season that came against Sacred Heart, Montgomery, and Fairview.  Her highest scoring game came with 18 points against Basile. Hargrove only managed two points on offense but made her presence known with four rebounds and five blocks.
"We were up by one at the half and held them to 34 points. It was a good win for us because we found a way to win after not playing our best," Fontenot said.
The loss came by one point on the road at Rosepine on January 3, 2017, with the score 39-38. "The game was tight the entire night and came down to the last few minutes," said Fontenot. "We missed four big free throws that would have helped us increase the lead and missed out on scoring the last two trips down the floor. They hit two back-to-back three point shots to take the lead, and Setorie (St. Andre) hit a shot at the buzzer that they said was a two point shot that was close to call.  If it were a three pointer, we would have had overtime."
Oakdale led 8-7 after the first quarter but relinquished the lead in the second quarter as Rosepine led 14-11 at the half. Each team scored 10 points in the third quarter making the score 24-11, but the game was decided in the fourth as Oakdale netted 12 points compared to Rosepine's 15.
"It is always tough to win on the road," Fontenot said. "It was a tough loss for our team but I know we will bounce back and respond."
The team looked to respond on the road against a winless Bunkie team in district, but the game was postponed because of the weather until the following Wednesday night on January 11.

Oakdale Warriors look to win a district championship

Oakdale Warriors look to win a district championship
Before the season started, members of the Oakdale basketball team expressed they have one goal in mind in coach Dustin Howard's first year at the school. Fifteen games into the season including one in the books in district play against Pickering, the Warriors look well on their way of accomplishing their goal and winning a district championship.
The Warriors are 9-6 on the season. Breaking down the season record, the team is 5-2 at home, 2-3 on the road, 2-1 on a neutral court, and 1-0 in district.
"I think we gonna be good this year," Raymond Guillory said. "And coach helped me out a lot during the summer. And some of the things he told us I used in AAU, and he helped me a lot. This coming season I think we gonna at least get a district championship because we got a good team, a better coach, and players that want to work hard."
Guillory leads his team at this point in the season in just about every statistical category. He leads with 436 points averaging out to 29.1 points per game. He has a total shooting percentage of 53% going 159 for 302 from the field including going 37 for 92 from beyond the arc at a 40 pecent clip. He is also 81 for 111 from the free throw line for 73 percent, leads in defensive rebounds with 40, total rebounds with 93, 6.2 rebounds per game, and 6 blocks.
"I think we are going to have some good outcomes this season," Malcolm Pugh said. "At least we're gonna win a district championship. I know that for sure. And coach Dustin Howard has been a good coach so far. Since he's here we might have a better chance of doing good things."
Pugh is second to Guillory statistics wise on the season. He is scoring 12.9 points per game with 194, is shooting 53 for 199 from the field for 32 percent including a 29 shooting percentage from three point range going 22 for 75, is making 72 percent of his 64 free throw attempts, and leads his team with 29 steals.

Lady Warriors open up district play at Menard

Lady Warriors open up district play at Menard
In the first game of district play in 3-2A, the Lady Warriors survived a back-and-forth affair at Menard winning 40-35 in exciting fashion.
"Well it was a big win for us," said head coach Ted Fontenot. "I think we came out to start the game shooting well. Menard did also. The game was back-and-forth the entire game until we decided to man up on their best two players in the second half. Sanaa St. Andre and Treshunda Joseph did a great job of holding those two girls in check. And then Alexis Davis came off the bench and held one of those players in check to give Sanaa a break."
"Down the stretch Oakdale just performed pretty good," said Menard coach Robert Flowers. "We missed some layups there that kind of hurt us a little bit, but we played hard. We gave it our all. Oakdale has a good team."
Each team scored on each of its possessions early in the game. Alandrea Cox got a steal to break up the scoring streak allowing Oakdale to take the 10-9 lead at the 4:39 mark of the first quarter as the Oakdale defense started to get control. KaMaesha St. Andre got the offensive rebound and put the ball back up for the score to go up 12-9. Menard them lulled Oakdale to sleep as they manufactured a basket and make it a one point game. At the end of the first quarter, Oakdale led 12-11.
The back-and-forth affair continues early in the second quarter. Sanaa St Andre nailed a basket from beyond the arc taking the 17-15 lead. Maddie Smith got a layup taking the 18-17 lead as a timeout was called at the 4:50 mark of the second quarter. Cox then got the defensive rebound allowing her team to convert on the turnover for two points and the 21-18 lead. Menard took the 22-21 lead with 2:09 before the half, followed by Treshunda Joseph scoring a basket taking the 23-22 lead in the waning moments of the second quarter.
The third quarter ended with the game knotted up at 27 all. Lucy Stehr took advantage of no shot clock and scored as seconds ticked off the clock. Sanaa St. Andre got the steal and dribbled down the court for the score putting her team up 30-29. Joseph gave her team the 32-31 lead as the back-and-forth affair spilled over into the fourth quarter. A timeout was called with just over two minutes in the game Oakdale leading by 1 at 36-35. Alexis Davis and Sanaa St. Andre each padded the lead both making their free throw attempts.
"The game came down to a couple steals that we turned into layups and then our team made some big free throws at the end to seal the game," Fontenot said. "It is always nice to win the first district game."

Warriors win at Plainview

Warriors win at Plainview
With a win against Fairview 62-53 in the finals of the Allen Parish Tournament, Oakdale earned its seventh win of the season and matched the win total from a season before.
"Beating Fairview at Fairview is a tough task," said coach Dustin Howard. "They have been a strong program for at least two decades. They aren't used to losing in that building and they didn't go down without a fight."

Howard credited the win to Derrick Winfield who sent the game to overtime with two free throws. "Once we got it to overtime, we scored the first two possessions and took control. We were able to slow down and make them extend and guard us, something they hadn't done all game. We executed on both ends and finished them off."
Oakdale lost to Bolton at home 57-55 the next Monday night, and a night later travelled to Plainview and won 70-48 as Howard returned home. "Knowing that I am from Plainview, it didn't take much to motivate my guys for this one. It was nice to go back to Plainview where I coached at for four seasons."

"We really passed the basketball well in this game. We jumped on them pretty hard early and was up 23 at halftime. We played a lot of different lineups and really shared the basketball in the second half. It was afun game."
On the other side of the court, it was less of a fun game for Plainview coach Elliott West. "We did some good things and bad, "West said. "Dribble penetration killed us tonight and has been our biggest Achilles heel all year. It was a great learning experience for my boys because we are so young and inexperienced outside of three seniors."
Plainview was up 7-4 when Malcolm Pugh made both free throws making it a one point game. Raymond Guillory scored from beneath the basket to go up 8-7, and Oakdale extended the lead to 10-7 with 4:20 in the opening quarter. Oakdale was winning the game at the free throw line as the Warriors were already shooting 1-for-1 in the first quarter.
Winfield got the offensive rebound on a missed free throw and converted for the basket putting his team up 23-9. Plainview finished the first quarter with 11 fouls and trailed Oakdale 23-13. Guillory scored a three pointer from the top of the key giving his team a 41-13 advantage. The first half ended with Oakdale up 43-19.
Guillory scored another three pointer to go up 52-30, and Winfield ended a Plainview scoring run and made the score 54-34. Oakdale added to the score as the buzzer sounded at the end of the third quarter and lead 60-39.
"We have played seven games in the last nine days, its good to have a little break for much needed rest," Howard said. "We are 8-5 going into the break and getting better everyday. I can't wait for the second half of the season and the future of Oakdale Warrior basketball."

Lady Warriors taper off before the Christmas break

Lady Warriors taper off before the Christmas break
With his team trailing 6-5 against Oakdale, the coach of Plainview Phillip George called a timeout and asked his team, "Why are we double teaming (Treshunda Joseph) to leave the second best player open?" It might not have been the defensive game plan drawn up, but it worked as the Lady Hornets beat the Lady Warriors 50-41.
The loss at Plainview was Oakdale's second in a row and third out of their last four games. The team split its two previous games in the Allen Parish Tournament beating Kinder and losing to Fairview in the finals. " We played well vs Kinder on the Friday night. All around good game for us. On Saturday we struggled against that good Fairview team," said coach Ted Fontenot.
"Fairview is just so quick and in shape that it is hard to stay with them for four quarters," said Fontenot. "They shoot the ball very well and score a lot of points. Plainview is the type of team that looks for their chances to score but shoots well in the paint and from the outside. I knew both these games were going to be tough to win in their gym.
The teams traded baskets in the first quarter that ended with the score 13-11 in favor of Plainview. Alex Harrison extended the lead to 15-11 inside the first minute of the second quarter, then Sanaa St. Andre drilled a three pointer to make it a one point game. Alandrea Cox came off the bench and contributed a basket as Oakdale again made it a one point game at 17-16. Joseph gave her team the 18-17 lead as she made both shots from the charity stripe.
Plainview took a timeout with 2:25 before the half and the score tied at 18. George told his team, "We cannot make a rebound to save our life." But his team could make free throws to take the 20-19 lead in the waning moments of the first half. Oakdale trailed 20-19 at the end of the 1st half
Harrison scored a basket coming out of intermission as Plainview began to extend the lead. Joseph then made both free throws making it a one possession game, but seconds later Allie Willis hit a three pointer for Plainview. Cox scored a basket to keep her team in the game as the third quarter wound to a close. Setorie St. Andre got a layup as time expired at the end of the quarter with her team down 33-30. A voice from among the Oakdale coaching staff cried out, "Now let's compete!"
Kennedy Johnson extended the lead to 38-31 with a basket from beyond the arc as Plainview went up 40-32. Plainview began to widen the gap. Kamaesha St. Andre made it a two possession game by scoring on both free throws, but Plainview made it a three possession game with under a minute remaining on the clock to preserve the win.
Oakdale now begins district play with a matchup between Holy Savior Menard on the road in Alexandria on December 27.
